UPDATED: Playoff Tracker – Bring on the playoffs

Finally. We’re here. Kind of.

For the second time since implementing a one-game playoff, the PBL will see it happen again. This time, the Holden Blue Jays will square off against the Beaumont Angels. Meanwhile the Leduc Milleteers (five-time defending champions) get a chance to continue their legacy with a first-round matchup against the Ryley Rebels. The Armena Royals strangely back their way into a pennant and await their first-round opponent.

With one game left, a vote taken place if the five-way tie takes place, here’s how I think the schedule will shake down?

Playoff Possibilities with latest tiebreaker vote:

Holden @ Beaumont

Beaumont @ Holden

Well, the Ryley Rebels have officially become the front-runner in less than a week of baseball. Their 8-3 win Wednesday night at home over Armena has put them in position to win the regular season title. The playoff tracker is basically useless to look at so I’ve tried to lay out the potential playoff picture depending on the outcomes of the final two games. Unfortunately, with rain in the forecast, we could once again be waiting to see how it all shakes out for another few days…

HOWEVER, as always, discrepancies or errors could happen. Don’t take this as gospel and let me know if you see something incorrect. Remember, the top four teams qualify. Tie breaker information is posted here. A one-game playoff is necessary according to league rules if the teams that are ranked 4 and 5 have the same record.

Permutations and Combinations: Playoff Possibilities

Records show head-to-head records possible with tied teams.

If Ryley and Beaumont win

  1. Ryley Rebels
  2. Beaumont Angels (3-1)
  3. Holden Blue Jays (2-2)
  4. Armena Royals (1-3)

Beaumont, Holden and Armena end up tied at 9-5 but Beaumont has the best record in the four games. Ryley finishes first outright with a 10-4 record.

If Ryley and Bardo win

  1. Ryley Rebels
  2. Holden Blue Jays (2-0)
  3. Armena Royals (0-2)
  4. *Leduc Milleteers and Beaumont Angels play a one-game playoff. According to rules a coin-toss determines home-field, however, even head-to-head the teams split the season series and tied in RF-RA (8-8).

Holden and Armena tie for second at 9-5 with Holden taking the season series. Ryley again, finishes first outright at 10-4 while the 8-6 Milleteers and Angels square off in a one-game playoff.

If Leduc and Beaumont win

  1. Armena Royals (5-4)
  2. Beaumont Angels (5-4)
  3. Leduc Milleteers (5-5)
  4. Holden Blue Jays (5-5) and Ryley Rebels (4-5) play a one-game playoff. According to rules a coin-toss determines home-field, however, the teams split the season series but Holden won RF-RA (4-3).

The death-defying five-way tie of 9-5 teams has in my interpretation the weirdest result. Tiebreaker rules state best record in the games among the tied teams. Armena and Beaumont have 5-4 records with Armena taking it on RF-RA (16-11). Then Leduc finishes third taking the season series with Holden. Ryley gets fifth but earns the one-game playoff with Holden.

Update: If Leduc and Beaumont win

  1. Armena Royals
  2. Leduc Milleteers
  3. Ryley Rebels
  4. Beaumont Angels play Holden Blue Jays in a one-game playoff.

The league did a preliminary vote and decided my interpretation of our existing rules should be overridden by a Baseball Alberta rule. However, playoff rule 4 seems to still apply? So a one-game playoff would still take place.

If Leduc and Bardo win

  1. Holden Blue Jays (5-3)
  2. Armena Royals (4-3)
  3. Leduc Milleteers (4-4)
  4. Ryley Rebels (2-4)

Another tie, but just a four-way (insert joke here) results in the Blue Jays winning another pennant while the Royals finish second and it looks a lot like last year’s playoffs with Ryley replacing Bardo.

***Again, if something is wrong, I do apologize. Lots of math this early in the morning.***
